Albion Fellows Bacon Center

I am a volunteer at Albion Fellows Bacon Center, a safe shelter for people who have been sexually abused or are in a domestic violence situation.  This blog is dedicated to everyone who has been, is now, or ever will be in an abusive situation:

For a domestic violence or sexual abuse victim, the world seems to be a place of darkness.  Wherever we look, the light is just out of reach, or has disappeared altogether.

When we look in the mirror, we see a face full of pain.  Even when we smile, if you look closely, the pain is visible in our eyes.  It only lasts for an instant, then it is no longer visible, but lurking in the recesses of our minds, shoved deep inside to keep it from consuming us.

Most of us are women.  Some are children.  And others are men.  But NONE of us are responsible for what happened to us.  We are everywhere.  We are your mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, friends, and neighbors.  Or you.  And me.

Is this you?  Did you wake up?  Did you open your eyes and get out of bed?

If so, you just took your first step as a survivor.

I know because I took that first step.  I am a sexual abuse survivor.
